Department Summary:
The UCLA Marching Band is housed within the Department of Music at the Herb Alpert School of Music. The Music Department oversees Marching Band staff and provides support with administrative and financial duties. Both the Department Manager and Department Chair maintain a vested interest in Marching Band operations.

Position Summary:

Substitute Associate director is experienced Marching Band professional. Applies theory and approaches relevant to the unique culture, structure, performative support to the UCLA Marching and Varsity Bands. This includes conducting the Marching Band or varsity band if needed, leading/ observing/ auditing/ advising sectionals. Duties also include substituting for Associate Director for productions, special events, travel; and interfacing with the general public, faculty and staff. Position is supervised by the Director of the UCLA Marching and Varsity Bands and reports to the Associate Director of UCLA and Varsity Marching Band. The substitute director prioritizes and completes ongoing tasks following established department guidelines and University policies. Assignments are made by the Director and Associate Directors of the UCLA Marching and Varsity Bands and Music's Manager, with review and guidance as required.

Qualifications:
  • 2 years plus Experience in performance and/or Marching Band field (Required)
  • Typing skills to prepare correspondence, forms, reports, etc. (Required)
  • Ability to speak English clearly and distinctly using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain and convey information to individuals at various organizational levels. (Required)
  • Ability to proofread and edit basic correspondence for correct grammar, spelling and punctuation. (Required)
  • Ability to establish and maintain collegial working relationships with staff and faculty. (Required)
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments and attend to detail when faced with deadlines, heavy workload, and compelling requests for service. (Required)
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction. (Required)
  • Ability to be assertive in a friendly and diplomatic manner. (Required)
  • Skill in operating a PC with word processing, spreadsheet, database and network functions and proficiency in the use of software such as Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, etc. (Required)
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and/or weekends as required for special events, band performances, etc. (Required)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and to use discretion when responding to inquiries. (Required)
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team. (Required)
  • Experience in performance and or Marching Band field 2 years. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications, & Professional Affiliations:
  • Bachelor's Degree In related area and/or equivalent combination of education and experience/training. (Required)
  • Master's Degree or advanced degree. (Preferred)

  • 5% Occasional travel to and from various athletic events.
