Job Description

The 150,000-member American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) seeks an energetic, highly organized government relations professional with excellent writing/communications skills, leadership experience, and a solid understanding of infrastructure issues to join our Washington, DC staff.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading federal and state legislative strategy, monitoring Congressional actions, forecasting emerging issues, and prioritizing staff resources based on most pressing items
  • Overseeing story placement for This Week in Washington and scheduling regular legislative briefings for ASCE members via Key Contact webinars
  • Ensuring the effective operation of the Society's policy committees
  • Providing leadership and oversight on Capitol Hill briefings and other legislative events focused on ASCE initiatives and publications such as the Infrastructure Report Card
  • Ensuring that all public policy positions advocated to federal and state governments are based on policy documents duly adopted by the Board of Direction
  • Managing submission of quarterly lobbying reports as required by law and submission of routine reports to ASCE Board on public policy activities
  • Serving as staff liaison for the Committee on Licensure

The successful candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a related field such as public affairs or policy, advanced degree preferred
  • Ten years experience working on legislative issues, including federal and state lobbying and professional association experience
  • Strong understanding of public policy and the political process with knowledge of transportation and infrastructure, tort reform, state and local procurement laws and regulations, and licensing laws and regulations
  • Demonstrated success managing and mentoring staff
  • An ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Strong writing and speaking skills
  • Thorough proficiency in MS Office
